Sedation

Nitrous oxide eases mild to moderate anxiety, so you stay calm and comfortable.

A calm, relaxed patient in the dental chair

Sedation, or laughing gas, is the most frequently used method for easing mild to moderate anxiety. Administered through a small mask that fits over your nose, it is an effective way to calm anxiety, raise your pain threshold, and even make time seem like it's passing quicker than usual. As the gas begins to work, you will become calm, although you will still be awake and able to talk with the dentist.

At the end of your appointment, you'll resume breathing regular oxygen, and all the effects of nitrous oxide will disappear, so you can resume your normal activities immediately.

Oral Sedation

We also have options for minimal sedation with our providers. If nitrous oxide on its own is not enough to keep you comfortable, tell us and we will talk through what is appropriate for you and for the treatment you need.

Common Questions

What kind of sedation do you offer?
Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas. You breathe it through a small mask over your nose, and it takes the edge off anxiety while you stay awake and able to talk with us. We also have options for minimal sedation with our providers, so ask us if nitrous alone is not enough.
How long does it take to wear off?
Right away. At the end of your appointment you breathe regular oxygen for a few minutes and the effects clear, so you can drive yourself home and get back to your day.
Is nitrous oxide safe for children?
Yes, it is one of the most common and safest ways to help an anxious child through treatment. We will talk it through with you first.
What if I am really nervous about the dentist?
Tell us. We hear it often and we do not judge. We can go slower, explain each step, schedule a longer visit, or use nitrous. Dr. Augustine is certified in nitrous sedation specifically to help anxious patients.
